This is a picture of lichen. Lichen is an organism that consists of a fungus and an alga living in a close, physical relationship which is beneficial to the fungus and alga (symbiosis). The alga provides
nutrients by photosynthesis, while the fungus
shades the alga from excessive sunlight and supplies water by absorbing water
vapor from the air. Lichens can grow on trees as well as rocks.
